Session 12
Adventures in Sound; Podcasting, Community Radio, and You.
Claire Thompson & Dave Del Rizzo
With the popularity of podcasts more and more people are consuming and creating great audio content. In this workshop participants will explore the potential of audio in the classroom. Readers' theatre, poetry readings, interviews with experts, news and current events, sonic collages; these are just a few of the possible projects you and your students could do. Part of our time will be spent recording audio and doing some basic editing using Audacity. We will also learn about potential partnerships with Peach City Community Radio; if your students are creating fabulous content, why not give them access to the airwaves! Participants are encouraged to bring headphones or ear buds.
By day, Dave Del Rizzo is a software developer for the National Research Council of Canada. In his spare time, he is passionate about inspiring his community to get behind the idea of independent radio in Penticton. Dave is the host of My Morning Racket and co-host of Left Off the Dial on Peach City Radio. He is heavily involved in the Programming and Technical aspects of the Radio Society, as well as engaging current and new volunteers in working with Peach City Radio.

Claire Thompson is in her 20th year of teaching and has taught students from grades K-12. In 2013 she decided to do a radio project with her grade 3-5 students. The kids created short audio pieces that were stitched together to form six 30 minute episodes which aired on Peach City Community Radio's online stream (archived episodes are at:
http://peachcityradio.org/programs/creationstation/). Since then Claire has become even more involved in radio and is currently the vice president of the Peach City Community Radio Society.
Intended Audience:
